I Must Design

Table of Contents

There are plenty of published games that are conducive to a competitive gameplay experience.  Why do some of these games inspire the formation of large tournament communities that maintain and expand the original player audience?  I created a survey with questions formulated using focus group techniques and submitted it to the online communities of a number of internationally popular tournament games to shed light on this issue.  I will present a few of the most notable findings that would be useful to two major sectors of the game development industry: teams creating games specifically for competitive play and companies seeking to extend an existing game’s multiplayer lifespan by enhancing its competitive aspect.
